Narrative Development

What makes a good story and how does culture play a part in developing one?

Fantasy magic dark background with a magic rose, flower, old book, old iron mirror. Smoke,

Outlining

There are two types of outliners: gardeners and architects. A gardener is someone who goes with the flow and lets the story dictate the outcome whereas architects let the outline guide the story. Whatever choice you decide to go with, having a basic outline of where you go is important to keeping n track of the main objective, which is to finish that novel!

Plot Development

A good story contains elements of suspense, action, and transformation. Keeping the readers engaged through purposeful writing not only makes for a compelling story but also creates a cohesive story from start to finish.

Character Development

Character development is just as important as plot development. Having a character struggle with accomplishing their main goal (plot) while dealing with their own personal struggles makes for a relatable character. It makes them human! And readers love being able to relate to characters.

Worldbuilding

Applying cultural elements to your story can prove difficult, but is incredibly important for a story, especially a Fantasy with worldbuilding elements. That is because culture tells us who we are, how we think, and how we process information. You can create two characters exactly the same, with the same build and abilities, or personality types, but if they come from two different cultures, it will impact their decision-making and how they handle the events that unfold in a story.

Show More, Less Telling

You often hear the saying, "show don't tell" and how telling is bad, but telling isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Showing to let the audience figure things out on their own and telling when you want the audience to know a piece of information. Showing is best when you want to drop hints and foreshadow events in your story. Telling is great when you want to leave little doubt and/or trick the audience into believing something that isn't (like a Red Herring for ex). A good storyteller knows how to create the perfect balance between the story and use plot devices to deceive it's audience to reveal the truth later.
